Odd Job Jack, season 5 of which begins Sunday July 22nd 2007 at 9:30 P.M. on The Comedy Network is a very smart, original cartoon show made for an adult audience or very wise teenagers. I like the look of Odd Job Jack, I like the premise, I like the stories, I really like the way it sneaks it many references to pop culture. It is hard to believe this is a Canadian cartoon.
Odd Job Jack, on The Comedy Network, is a really cool, funny cartoon you want to record just so you can go back and get all the references and jokes you missed the first time around. The premise is Jack Ryder (voiced by Don McKellar) works for a temp agency and gets a different job episode after episode. This allows the show this cartoon to be totally different episode after episode.
Season 5 opens with Jack getting a job as a mascot and flier pusher for a local store. He ends up competing for sidewalk space and a cute blonde in a bikini with all the other mascots. Jack gets this assignment from his latest case agent at the temp agency, an ex-con. This allows for a few references to prison movies including The Shawshank Redemption. Jack's wears a fly-infested gorilla suit and this leads to a really great pastiche of King Kong.
Episode 2 of The Comedy Network's Odd Job Jack Season 5, Jack Ryder Mindhumper, has Jack assigned to be a magician's assistant, taking over the magician's act and taking it t a new, very extreme level. There's cartoon blood and gore in this one, lots of crazy stunts, a probably a commentary on modern TV but I was too busy enjoying the cartoon to do the thinking necessary to get it. If you watch closely, you will notice Jack's Alice Cooper eye switches from the right to the left eye in one very short scene.
Odd Job Jack Season 5 is a really cool and entertaining Comedy Network cartoon that is worth scheduling on your cable box.
