Cutting Edge Comedians of the 60s and 70s is a fan's must have compilation stand-up comedy DVD. The Cutting Edge DVD features a who's who of comedy in the sixties and seventies performing on a TV entertainment show, often Mike Douglas. Tough a couple of these clips show their age -for example the Jackie Mason clip strobes-- the jokes themselves have weathered well and most of these clips of stand-up routines have not been available before:

Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner in a 2000 Year Old Man bit.

Mason riding his first wave of popularity with a routine about going to the psychologist.

There are many great, classic routines on Cutting Edge Comedians of the 60s and 70s and one of these is Bob Newhart doing his Returning a Gift bit.

Shelley Berman has a routine about people writing complaint letters and a good dentist bit.

I had never seen Bill Cosby's 75$ car routine but it is on the Cutting Edge DVD.

Jonathan Winters as General Hopping Mad Hooterton from the Andy Williams show is something I have seen on another DVD and not Winters' best.

If you remember the comedy duo of Hendra & Ullett, you are showing your age. This is good stiff upper lip absurd comedy.

Godfrey Cambridge was the best Black comic of his time and amazingly edgy in a very subtle way. His routine here is one I had not seen or heard before.

Social satirist Mort Sahl has a confusing blackboard math routine on politics.

Rare clips from the 1974 Smothers Brothers Summer Show and Steve Martin are unfortunately only a couple of minutes long.

Rowan and Martin follow with a rare clip of a sketch about an actor and a drunk heckler in the audience. A great find for Rowan & Martin fans but not their best material.

Lily Tomlin and Edith Anne are interviewed and draw a somewhat risqué picture on a 1975 show. This comedy clip reveals the origins of Sarah Silverman's character comedy.

The Cutting Edge Comedians DVD features two George Carlin clips. The first is again a rarity and shows a straight Carlin doing a Bob Newhart style routine about a pep talk while the Santa Maria is coming back from America. Second is the God bit from Class Clown.

Richard Pryor is also featured in an early straight clip and a second, short and wilder routine about a wino and a junkie.

Andy Kaufman does an interview more or less as Taxi's Latka Gravas reading a kid's book. Interesting.

Billy Crystal has a very short clip doing an imitation of some entertainer.

Jay Leno has an incomplete bit that's not bad.

David Letterman's bit is kind of lame.

Cutting Edge Comedians of the 60s and 70s has a bonus feature of celebrity commercials.
