The Flying Solo Series has been going strong since its inauguration in 2006. This series consists of one-man shows by stand-up comics who practice a different brand of comedy. For comedy fans who like to try out new things, the Flying Solo series is a really good deal: my experience is most of the shows in the past have been quite good -aside from Zack Galifianakis last year- and price wise you cannot do better at Just For Laughs.
A show I look forward to after talking to him is Australian Brendon Burns. His one-man show is titled So I Suppose This Is Offensive! During his interview with us Burns promised Xena Warrior Princess style women in tight vinyl outfits.
This is aggressive in your face blue comedy that is definitely not for the easily offended. Like all successful edgy stand-up comedians, Burns' use of foul language is not a crutch to spice up weak material. He is a biographical comic whose life and take on things make for a fairly dark but very funny show. Burns has been a hit at the Edinburgh Comedy Festival since 1997. Watch a Brendon Burns clip.
Brendon Burns will be at Theatre Ste-Catherine from July 10 to 19th for either 7:00 or 9:00 shows. Tickets are 17.50 which is a pretty fair price. I would suggest going to a 9:00 show. 7 o'clock audiences are often an older crowd that is less comfortable with edgy stand-up and this can have a bit of a wet blanket effect. I get the feeling though the 7 o'clock shows are a Just For Laughs website mistake and all shows will be at 9.
For his second visit at Just For Laughs David O'Doherty is Flying Solo in a show titled It's David O'Doherty Time. The show is at 7 or 9 P.M. at Cabaret Juste Pour Rire from July 10th to the 18th. This is billed as a "delightful mix of acute observation and startling invention". There will be music involved. O'Doherty has toured with the very funny Tommy Tiernan, Demetri Martin, and won a few comedy awards on the wrong side of the pond. Tickets are $17.50. Watch a clip of David O'Doherty
The Flying Solo series is big on British stand-up comedy this year. Also in the series is Josie Long. Her one-woman stand-up show is titled Trying is Good. She too will be at Theatre Ste-Catherine July 10th to the 18th at 7 P.M. Tickets are $15.00.
Another $15.00 tickets is Mike Birbiglia and his show Sleepwalk With Me. I am very ambivalent about Birbiglia as I have found him to be uneven. He too will be at Theatre Ste-Catherine but from July 17th to the 20th at 7 o'clock. An extra show has been added July 19th 9:30 at Cabaret Juste Pour Rire.
Also in the 2008 Flying Solo series is Patrice Oneal in Positivity from July 15th to the 19th. The show is at 11 P.M. so you can bet this is going to be blue, edgy comedy not for the faint of heart and people who go to bed early. The show is said to cover everything from private parts to American politics i.e. pussy, donkeys, and elephants. Watch a clip of Patrice O'Neal
A bit of advice: At these prices get your tickets early.
