Pineapple Express
Seth Rogen, James Franco
Directed by David Gordon Green
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment 2009
111 minutes

Pineapple Express claims to be an action comedy. It stars Seth Rogen and James Franco as two stoners who are in way over their pot clouded heads after a drug lord (Gary Cole) and a crooked cop (Rosie Perez) think they witnessed a murder. This is when Pineapple Express becomes a buddy / chase movie or, as Apatow would like you to think, a Midnight Run for the stoner set. Pineapple Express premiered at the 2008 Just For Laughs Comedy Festival.

Written by Pineapple Express star Seth Rogen and Even Goldberg, this movie is directed by David Gordon Green who is perhaps known for indie films like George Washington and All the Real Girls and as the college roommate of Express co-star Danny McBride who introduced him to Apatow.

Pineapple Express is either going to be solid or a Drillbit Taylor style disaster.

On the plus side Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg who were behind Superbad wrote the script for this action-comedy based on an Apatow idea. The movie is a return to comedy for James Franco (Freaks and Geeks and Spiderman) who plays Saul, dealer of some primo pot called Pineapple Express. Seth Rogen starred in 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, and Freaks and Geeks

On the Oh, God, please, no, make them stop side, this movie has Drillbit Taylor connections: it is co-written by the same guy and produced by the same producer.

There is also the fact the PR sheet for Pineapple Express is a bit of a mess and much too glowing, even for PR stuff.

This critic thinks Pineapple Express is a wait to see what the word of mouth is kind of comedy.
