Canadian comic Deb DiGiovani MCs the 2008 Cream of Comedy, a one-hour showdown featuring five different stand-up comedy acts: Bryan O’Gorman, Alana Johnston, Adam Christie, Zabrina Chevannes, and duo 7 Minutes in Heaven. This show airs Sunday, March 1st 2009 at 10 P.M. on The Comedy Network.
The 2008 Cream of Comedy winner gets the prestigious Tim Sims Encouragement Award; “prestigious” means no one has heard of it. There is also a $5,000 first prize which, in Canadian TV dollars is a fortune.
MC Deb DiGiovani does an excellent job hosting the show. She puts out some A material to warm up the crowd and not every comic does that. She is a solid stand-up although the constant “know what I’m saying” does bug the &^^% out of me.
Not particularly impressive in Cream of Comedy is the Big Brother style intro video. Especially awful is Adam Christie’s who says he is going to win because the other comics are, and I quote, “garbage”. Christie is as energetic as a dead battery and needs to rethink his joke sequence: his girlfriend breaks up with him before they are walking down the street together. Notice the canned yuks inserted in his set.
Zabrina Chevannes has some good biographical material and decent Jamaican folk / white fold stuff. Next up is 7 Minutes In Heaven, a funny sketch comedy dysfunctional couple act that also sings. They are quite fun but a bit over the top for my taste.
They are followed by Bryan O’Gorman who messes with the audience’s expectations with his opening joke. O’Gorman has good adult material but should give the audience a couple of seconds to follow along.
I simply did not get Alana Johnston, a character comic because I have no idea who that character was supposed to be.
And the winner is …. on The Comedy Network March 1st 2009 at 10 P.M. The loser is the Debra Show bit between the acts.
