The Medicine Show is the second episode of six in the CBC Winnipeg Comedy Festival 2008 series. Hosted by Canadian stand-up comic Mike Wilmot, this show features Darrell Dennis, Simon Rakoff, and Brad Muise. As the title promises, this episode is thirty minutes of stand-up comedy about health and personal habits, doctors, and drugs. The Winnipeg Comedy Festival shows follow the CBC Halifax Comedy Shows which air at 9 P.M.
Host Mike Wilmot opens the show strong with a good bit about not taking care of himself and what it takes for a man to go see a doctor. Being a male comic, Wilmot cannot avoid doing a couple of prostate exam bits.
Brad Muise doesn’t pick up the laughs the mc set up for him. There is something tentative about this stand-up comic’s delivery, he ends everything on a question, that is either a bad habit or a reflection his rather ordinary material.
Muise is followed by Darrell Dennis. The Native Canadian comic does a good routine on alternative medicine. Of course, he cannot avoid a few digs at the Lakota commercials but also does a few too short jokes on other alternatives in alternative medicine. Muise is good but he casts too wide a net for the too short time he has which dilutes the material. He does make the Winnipeg audience squirm a bit with a Metis joke even if his Metis is not much of one.
The closer for the second episode of the CBC Winnipeg Comedy Festival 2008 is Simon Rakoff. Rakoff owns my all-time favorite observation comedy bit, “All the superheroes are Jewish.”. This stand-up comedy bit meanders a bit before he gets to the doctor’s but the comedian uses this for a few surprising punchlines.
The Medicine show is not best of the six shows in the series but it is pretty decent. It airs Monday, March 16th 2009 at 9:30 P.M. on the CBC.
