You have to watch this show if only for the opening number where Shaun Majumder performs Regina: The Musical. The rest of Best of the Fest Ninth Annual Canadian Comedy Awards and Festival is decent enough. You can catch this stand-up comedy show March 28th 2009 at 10 P.M. on The Comedy Network. Do not adjust the contrast on your 46” True HD (grunt grunt) set: the show is a little too dark.
The Best of the Fest Canadian Comedy Awards and Festival 2008 show features cameos by Gerry Dee and Lorne Cardinal (Corner Gas), comedy superstar Russell Peters accepting an award on tape, Gavin Crawford, performances by Sean Cullen, Peter Anthony, Jennifer Grant, David Merry, Derek Edwards, DeAnne Smith, and more.
I am not quite sure anybody knows what this show is supposed to be: Majumder sings Regina the Musical before doing a lame scene with Gerry Dee as to who is hosting the show. There are other lame sketches, stand-up comedy sets, and a few comics accepting an award through videotape –including one who rips off a Future Shop commercial. The only connection I could find in this is everyone won or was nominated for a Canadian Comedy Award some time in the past.
Dee gets to introduce a rock music stand-up comedy bit by Sean Cullen. Cullen is very talented and the bit is good but I can never get over the impression he oversells his material.
Jennifer Grant has a too short but pretty good set. She is followed by David Merry who does a few smart answers to dumb questions and some gadget and magic based jokes. Merry also does not get enough stage time.
New face DeeAnne Smith’s bit about being a nanny and weird products does not quite work. Majumder shows why his career has plateaued before he introduces 2007 Best Newcomer winner Peter Anthony. Anthony does well considering the cold audience and cavernous venue.
Derek Edwards closes the show with a decent set about Via Rail, flying WestJet, and party tips.
