I was irked and miffed when the Comedy Network bumped the Drew Hastings Comedy Central special a couple of months ago. I like Hastings a lot and liked the idea other stand-up comedy fans would get to see him. The Comedy Network has made up for it by scheduling Irked and Miffed on the 4th of July 2009 at 10 P.M.
Hastings is a smart comic who operates on the darker side of life. What I especially like about this stand-up is his offbeat take on things. The comedian does look for his footing in the first couple of minutes of this Comedy Central special but it is smooth sailing after that.
Personal favorites in Irked and Miffed are the gentleman farmer routine although the bit is a tad wee bit better on Hastings’s comedy CD I Have No Fight With You People. Other good bits in this show include the coyote hunt, sex in your fifties, gentleman pig farming, and chainsaws.
The short bit on Hart to Hart is also quite good.
This is a smartly filmed comedy special where the cameraman and producer are paying attention to what the comic is doing. When Hastings comments on the audience you get to see the audience. I know it sounds dumb but you’d be surprised how often this does not happen with other stand-up comedy shows.
If you like sardonic and smart comics, Drew Hastings Irked and Miffed at 10 P.M. on the 4th of July on The Comedy Network is a good way to celebrate our southern neighbor’s birthday.
