As situation comedy goes, It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia is beyond bizarre and far beyond anything shown on American TV ever, and that includes British sitcoms. It is hard to explain what this show is but if you can imagine Cheers on ‘roids and LSD or Seinfeld with laughs you may get a glimpse of what It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia is like. This review is based on a two-episode screener for this situation comedy’s Season 4 DVD set.

Having reviewed season 3 of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the screener was enough to give a good idea of what the show was like a year later. Just as weird and still very much a comedy you either love or hate.

I happen to love it but that is because I can get over what has to be the worst sitcom actor ever, Charlie Day. Day has yet to meat a line he cannot scream at the top of his lungs in a bad imitation of Bobcat Goldthwait.  Fortunately, the rest of the cast, especially Kaitlin Olson and the great Danny DeVito make up for a godawful central character.

Episodes in It’s Always Sunny in Philadephia include the gang putting on a musical for no apparent reason, imitating Extreme Home Makeover after obviously misreading The Secret and before thinking about how Extreme Makeover really works. Other shows include kidnapping a critic who slammed the bar (or is it his neighbor?), and a episode involving jokes about cannibalism – I told you the show was an acquired taste.

Special features on this Season 4 It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia DVD set include The Nightman Cometh Live! (a feature on the 2 live performances of the episode that shows getting the audience drunk was not a good idea), and Dennis Reynolds: An Erotic Life, and a blooper reel.

An easter egg is available if you press the right arrow once you are on Season 4 Blooper Reel. This highlights a garbage bag and gives you a short scene from the Dennis Reynolds episode.

Look for comic Sinbad in one of the episodes and Rhea Perlman (Cheers) as the little old lady in Nightman.
