If you warm up a roast you get leftovers aka Burned: The Roasts’ Most Outrageous Moments. Airing on The Comedy Network September 19th 2009 at 10 P.M. this one-hour show hosted by Greg Giraldo features the best moments of the Comedy Central Roasts of William Shatner, Bog Saget, Larry The Cable Guy, Flavor Flav, Denis Leary, Jeff Foxworthy, and Pamela Anderson. It is fun enough but not quite a best.
Giraldo comes across as warmed-over mashed potatoes. He is behind a podium in a lousy and obviously very small studio setting and does the best he can with some lame writing. The rest of the show consists in many 5 to 10 second clips of various celebrities and comics telling a joke at the expense of the roasted or the roasted answering back.
The yardstick for any celebrity roast show is the Dean Martin Roasts of way back when. If I remember well, the Best Ofs in this series were full testimonials for a variety of roasted celebrities. Perhaps this is what Burned: The Roasts’ Most Outrageous moments should have gone for. The first few minutes are more like an infomercial for the DVD than anything else.
A major mistake is in how the show is put together. For example the Top Ten Jokes are separated by various other bits. Whazzup with that? The snippets are loosely, as loose as Lisa Lampanelli’s snatch, built around a theme such as weird guest, nastiest joke, worst insult, jokes about Lisa Lampanelli, and jokes about a particular roaster.
It would have been nice if someone had actually put a bit of thought behind Burned: The Roasts’ Most Outrageous Moments. Oh well. You can catch this decent enough could have been better show Saturday September 19th 2009 at 10 P.M. on The Comedy Network.
