Jan 2nd 2010 9 p.m. to Jan 4th 5 a.m.

The Comedy Network ends its special holiday programming with a 36-hour stand-up comedy block starting January 2nd 2010. It opens with the excellent Chris Rock Kill the Messenger at 9 p.m. and closes January 4th at 5 a.m. with Zack Galifianakis. This is an almost stellar line-up with the likes of George Carlin, Russell Peters, Russell Brand, and Dane Cook

The two absolutely best are George Carlin first and last HBO comedy specials: On Location aka Carlin at USC and It’s Bad For Ya. Check the schedule here below. This allows you to see how much Carlin’s tone had changed through the years. On Location, also known as the soundtrack for the On The Road CD, features a very easy going Carlin who delivers funny but mild social commentary on supermarkets, dogs and cats, Chinese guys named Rusty and so on. It’s Bad For Ya features a more philosophical comic whose social commentary is very acidic. This show features a brilliant piece on death and closes with very good routines on national pride, rights, and, of course, religion.

Also of note in a generally solid line-up is Wanda Sykes and her 2003 Comedy Central Special Tongue Untied. It airs January 3rd at 5 a.m. and 10 p.m. This show maybe six years old and topical but it is still very biting and funny. George W. Bush, the Pope and pedophile priests really get nailed. Other stand-up bits include DUI, strip clubs, an excellent stand-up comedy bit on men and women; especially the tests women give men.
The rest of this show is excellent.

Also of note, and you can check the review links here below are of course Chris Rock Kill the Messenger and Russell Brand Live in New York City. Brand is a bit of an acquired taste though. Russell Peters Outsourced is a better bet than Red, White, and Brown.

The Comedy Nework Stand-up Comedy Special Special make for great TV while recuperating from the hellidays.
