Few people liked Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Last Action Hero when it came out. The DVD allowed many to discover this wonderfully clever and funny action comedy and action movie spoof. Now available on Blu-ray, Last Action Hero is really a blast even without any special features whatsoever aside from Movie IQ through BD Live. If you have not seen this movie, you really owe it to yourself to do so.

Last Action Hero is a comedy about action movies that thinks it is an action movie. Young Danny Madigan is a big fan of Jack Slater (Schwarzenegger) movies. An old projectionist gives him a special invite to screen the latest Slater movie before everybody else. He also gives him a movie ticket given to him by Houdini itself. The ticket is magic but has a mind of its own. Danny gets projected into the Jack Slater movie. He then tries to convince everybody they are not real.

The Jack Slater movie really believes it is an action movie while Last Action Hero cleverly uses the tropes it is also poking fun at. There’s a lot going on here including a cameo by Robert Patrick, the T-1000 from Terminator 2 and various jokes about various past Schwarzenegger movies such as Stallone being the Terminator –according to Slater his best performance ever.

Then, things get even weirder.

This Blu-ray action comedy features a couple of grainy shots. Especially so is the scene after Slater arrives in Vivaldi’s house. It is hard to figure out if it is meant to be that way, the movie being what it is, but I doubt it.

Last Action Hero is a bit too long for its own good at over 2 hours but it is so much fun to watch and also catch the many movie references it does not really matter.

It is unfortunate Sony Pictures did not spend a few bucks and get a commentary track or at least a pop up video feature that points out all the references and inside jokes.
