Season 12 of Comedy Now! starts Saturday June 12th at 10 p.m. on CTV. This year's stand-up comedy line-up includes Ian Bagg, Simon King, Darcy Michael, Kelly Taylor, Dana Alexander, Trent McClellan, Allyson Smith, Dylan Rhymer, JP Mass, Ivan Decker, Dave Hemstad, Debra DiGiovanni, and Tyler Hawkins. Comedy Now is followed by season 5 of the sketch comedy show Comedy Inc at 10:30. These shows will also air this fall on The Comedy Network.
Ian Bagg opens season 12 of Comedy Now! with a show that gets better once the audience gets on board. Bagg works very hard at first to get the studio audience in on the idea of being at a stand-up comedy show. This explains why this particular show contains more than the usual amount of canned yuks at the beginning.
Once everybody is on the same page, Bagg's dependence on audience interaction to set up this material is less obvious and the show show funnier. Ian Bagg is a quick paced, short routine comic who does some adult material but nothing controversial.
Though this is not my favorite approach to stand-up comedy, Bagg makes it work for him. He has a few very good bits, especially the Mormons in Afghanistan and the growing up in a small northern BC town. These two premises could and really should be expanded.
Some of this comic's routines depend on old news like Lisa Nowak, the jealous astronaut who drove cross-country wearing an adult diaper, Katrina, and Siegfried and Roy. He does manage to make the bits funny and even has a few update on Katrina jokes.
Comedy Now! starring Ian Bagg is well worth watching.
I really wish the producers would revise the static stand in front of the mic and do not move format of the show. It is annoying and gives it an automated camera low budget feel.
