You are going to enjoy Mom's the Word 2 Unhinged at the Montreal Just For Laughs Comedy Festival. You will enjoy it even more if you are a woman, older than 40, and a mother. This 5 women sort of play and sketch comedy show stars Jill Daum, Alison Kelly, Barbara Pollard, Beverly Elliott, and Susinn McFarlen. It is at the Centaur Theatre from July 6th to 18th.
Mom's the Word 2 is 5 mothers who tell their stories either separately or together. Motherhood and children have always been good comedy fodder and this show proves you can still mine it. It also showed at least one setup and punchline is more than déjà vu and that is the story of the mother rushing to get her kids to school on time only to find out ....
Overall, pretty much everybody I talked to enjoyed the show. It is a little uneven and there were reservations about the sound quality: the actresses are not wearing a mic so some lines got garbled, stepped on by the audience's reaction, or not loud enough. The latter is especially true of Jill Daum.
My, and not only mine, biggest reservation has to do with using cancer as one of the stories. The mother discovering she had cancer really pulled the rug under the show. Even more so since Mom's the Word 2 immediately moves from the big C to a short skit about a mother being called stupid. You cannot leave the audience hanging like that with a topic as big as that. An audience member did point out the big C affects 1 out of every 5 women so it had its place but its place was out of sync.
This said, Mom's the Word 2 Unhinged is a very audience friendly show with, for those who care, only a couple of curse words. I am still not convinced the word douchebag is applied to women in any insult exchange.
