Community is a very ordinary NBC situation comedy that transposes the group of high school nerds premise to a community college. Community The Complete First Season is a 25 episode 4 DVD sitcom set that allows you to join a study group of peculiar but not quite funny enough students at Greendale Community College. Even if Modern Warfare on DVD 4 is brilliant, there are not enough really decent episodes to make this set worth getting.
Jeff Winger (Joel McHale) is a disbarred lawyer who must graduate Greendale Community College if he wants to practice law again. A cute coed named Brita (Jacobs) tells him she is having problems with Spanish. Jeff tells her he is in a study group and she can join. This is a lie but a study group does form around Jeff and soon that study group becomes a community of different but nice misfits.
This study group community also includes a Muslim named Abed, a single mother going back to school, a former high school jock and the wallflower who still has a crush on him, and a retired business tycoon (Chevy Chase).
This situation comedy is formulaic right off the bat. Many episodes have Jeff trying to get in Britta's pants while two study group members are involved in a secondary story of some sort.
Most annoying in this sitcom is Chang, the Spanish teacher played by Ken Jeong (The Hangover). There is nothing funny in his too long scenes.
Lee Majors (Six Million Dollar Man) shows up in Beginner Pottery (DVD 3). There is a good spoof of Good Will Hunting in the English as a Second Language episode.
Special features on this situation comedy DVD set include Commentary on every episode; Extended Cuts of Pilot and Communication Studies episodes; Outtakes on every disc; Season One Cast Evaluations; Season One Highlight Reel; Creative Compromises Featurette; Advanced Criminal Law Alternative Scenes; and 3 Mini Episodes
