You know it is a Comedy Network Christmas special when New York s Mayor Bloomberg tells Miss Piggy "That would be rude and the one thing New Yorker s are known for is being polite." Thus opens A Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa which airs Saturday December 18th at 5 on The Comedy Network. This 2008 made for TV movie is a welcome addition to the family Christmas TV schedule and almost a classic.
Gonzo forgets to mail three letters to Santa. The Muppets cancel their vacation plans and decide to help Gonzo deliver the letters personally. They encounter a few strange characters and a few adventures on the way.
A Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa will entertain both kids and adults. There are a few inside jokes here including characters from The Sopranos. I really liked Beeker making a wish and getting a beautiful brunette who says meemeemee.
The writing is way above par in this Christmas special. It is really worth paying attention to this Muppet special as some of the jokes go by really quickly.
The weak element in A Muppet Christmas is the tunes. You know people who write Christmas ditties have run out of topics when they are down to singing the praises of postal workers, "always cheerful in the ways they serve us". Fortunately Kermit brings viewers back to reality when he comments that the post office is going postal after Gonzo breaks something. It is a good thing the story is better than the tunes.
Look for cameos by Whoopi Goldberg, Nathan Lane, Jesse L Martin of Law and Order, and Uma Thurman.
Other notable shows on The Comedy Network over the 2010 holiday season include the Christmas Day Big Bang Theory marathon starting at 8 a.m. and the Corner Gas marathon Dec 31st to Jan 2nd.
