E! is dedicated to everything entertainment and Hollywood. What more appropriate then than After Lately, a mockumentary situation comedy about a late-night entertainment show. The twist here, and it is a good one, is After Lately is about a real show, Chelsea Lately which airs weekdays at 11 p.m. on E! After Lately will air Sundays at 11 p.m. on the same network.
This review is based on a screener of the premiere episode.
Comparisons are wonky but useful to quickly nail a concept. After Lately is sort of The Larry Sanders Show but with real writers and a real TV show and Chelsea Handler has a Murphy Brown mean / no-nonsense streak.
You do not have to be familiar with the weekday Chelsea Lately show to enjoy its spinoff sitcom. There are no doubt joke levels only regular viewers get but After Lately knows it has to please more than just fans of the show so none of the humor feels clubbish.
Like all pilot episodes, the one for After Lately suffers a bit from second banana syndrome where all the actors are obviously trying to impress so that their supporting character becomes a regular.
The Lately crew consists of rather competitive writers with a somewhat visible mean streak such as the practical jokes they all play on fellow writer Jeffrey. The pilot has the staff competing for spots on Chelsea s trip to Cabo.
This TV based situation comedy / mockumentary is entertaining and promising. I just wonder how many viewers are out there Sundays at 11 p.m.: the show deserves a better crack at ratings.
