It turns out there is such a thing as a funny Galifianakis. It is Nick, the artist and cartoonist. He is related to the other, annoying one but that is not his fault. These cartoons are illustrations for Carolyn Hax’s advice column in the Washington Post. You do not need to know anything about what the advice was to enjoy these cartoons. Kindle at Amazon
In fact, many if not most of Nick Galifianakis’ illustrations could easily belong on the comics page along with other one-panel cartoons such as Toles’
The subtitle for If You Loved Me, You’d Think This Was Cute is “uncomfortably true cartoons about you”. Galifianakis is pushing it a bit but these are very funny illustrations about relationship foibles.
There is the occasional page where part of one cartoon is blown up to show the artistry and complexity of the drawing.
The text is either in balloon form or under the box. Some of the lines can stand on their own. A favorite is the bridesmaid’s toast, “I nurse you through the torment of this guy, bite my tongue at the vows, and you thank me with this dress which I pay for. … To friendship.”
The cartoons feature recurring characters such as the big guy with the Leno chin, his buddy, and the girl with the pony tail or hair in a bun. This gives a unity of sorts to this collection.
It is a shame the wrong Galifianakis is famous.
