The Long, Long Trailer
Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz
Directed by Vincente Minelli
Originally released 1954
Color Fullscreen
Warner Home Entertainment 2011

The Lucille Ball volume of the Turner Classic Movies collection features 4 DVD. The movies are The Long, Long Trailer (1954) and Forever Darling (1956) with Desi Arnaz, The Marx Brothers in Room Service (1938), and Du Barry Was A Lady (1943) with Gene Kelly and Red Skelton. This is an enjoyable collection with each DVD featuring a short, a cartoon, and the movie trailer. An improvement in the TCM Film Collection is the DVD are no longer double sided.

Lucille Ball and real life husband Desi Arnaz play newlyweds Nick and Tacy Bolton. Nick’s job as an engineer requires him to travel a lot so Tacy (who is similar to but a bit more serious that the character Ball played on I Love Lucy) gets it in her head they should buy a trailer so they can go from town to town together.

Things quickly get out of hand as the couple struggles with the trailer, being married, and various incidents on the road.

Ball gets a few scenes to do some of the slapstick physical comedy she was so good at. The Long, Long Trailer also proves Arnaz could more than hold his own when it came to this kind of work.

There are a couple of moments that are rather dated in The Long, Long trailer such as the two obligatory musical numbers; one featuring Lucille Ball, the other Arnaz.

This is a very enjoyable comedy and, for me, the highlight of the Turner Classic Movies Lucille Ball collection.
