Sometimes the artistry of a movie can make up for the flaws in the movie. Such has been the case with many movies in the history of film and sometimes deeply flawed movies like The Warriors go on to cult status on the strength of that artistry and touching a chord with the audience. Puss in Boots has an amazing artistry to it and it is unmistakably right there on the screen. Visually there are parts of Puss in Boots which are simply stunning.
Any movie which is primarily directed at a young audience, ages 5 to 10, is going to have to do something for the parents who bring the children and Puss in Boots delivers to both audiences keeping. This is in no small part to the talented voice work of Antonio Banderas as Puss in Boots, Salma Hayek as Kitty Softpaws, Zach Galifiankis as Humpty Dumpty, Amy Sedaris as Jill and Billy Bob Thorton as Jack. Banderas' Puss in Boots was a hit in Shrek and the feline vanity still drips like honey from his voice. Hayek delivers with absolute ease the confidence and allure needed to tame and challenge Puss in Boots the leads work very well off of each other.
The script is a strange combination of buddy, road, adventure movie with more than a few sequences of acrobatics and dance thrown in for good measure. Fast paced, pretty and clever in its use of other fairy tales Puss in Boots is sure to please everyone who approaches it for what it is – a pleasant pass time, a diversion. Unlike Shrek there is no deeper meaning hidden in the tale the whole story is right there on screen for everyone to enjoy. This will easily make it into the permanent collections of librarys which already have Shrek and perhaps into some that are just in need of something beautiful to look at.
