Billy Gardell scores with Halftime. The star of Mike and Molly gives a one-hour performance in front of a hometown crowd. This show airs February 4th at 9 on The Comedy Network and you are really going to miss something if you do not tune in.
Gardell’s forte is relationship comedy. The core of Halftime is men and women, husbands and wives, and married life. Though the stupid man vs. intelligent woman set-up is old and slightly irritating Billy Gardell has fresh material and his balanced approach makes this kind of stuff funny and more than palatable. It also really helps that he never relies on a fat joke to get the laughs
Halftime opens with some throwaway material about drinking and recent newsworthy heroics. The stand-up really gets going with a bit about growing up without all the modern conveniences when “we were happy with caps and a rock and wandering around with a book of matches looking for stuff to burn”. The show closes with a decent bit on religion and his dad getting old that is also a good relationship bit.
The February Saturday Night Stand Up on The Comedy Network is rock solid. Feb 11 has Lisa Lampanelli Long Live The Queen, Feb 18 has John Mulaney’s New In Town, and Feb 25th has Wanda Sykes and ImA Be Me
