Partners is a new Citytv situation comedy that has a few good things going for it and one major strike. The show is about two thirty-something childhood friends who are architects. Joe is with Ali and Louis is with Wyatt. Partners was created by the same people as Will & Grace. It airs premieres Monday September 24th at 8:30 right after How I Met Your Mother. It is a good time slot but I doubt the audience will stick around.
Based on the Pilot episode, the characters in this sitcom are little but stereotypes. This is especially true of Louis (Michael Urie of Ugly Betty) who is nothing but a collage of gay character cliches. You would expect something better and more original in 2012. It is even more true of a secondary character, a secretary named Ro-Ro (Tracy Vilar) who is first introduced with a reference to the Latinos in West Side Story (no, I am not kidding).
This episode introduces the relationship between Joe and Louis. Louis then gets Joe intro so much trouble Joe feels the friendship is over. Louis then fixes things with Joe's girlfriend to save their friendship. If it sounds like the synopsis of a romantic comedy movie, it pretty much is.
I see nothing in this show to indicate it will even come close to lasting past Christmas 2012.
To see for yourself, you can go to the Citytv website starting August 27th and watch this pilot episode. While you are at it, check out the much better The Mindy Project.
