Mom is a new situation comedy that will air Mondays at 9:30 on CITY. The series is produced by Chuck Lorre of Big Bang fame and it shows in the quirky characters and humor. Though the pilot is interesting and the opening scene funny and original, I doubt there is enough here to keep an audience interested. Time will tell and then again I called 30 Rock a turkey. The show premieres September 23rd. Personally, I much prefer The Crazy Ones with Robin Williams which starts Sept 26th at 9 and Brooklyn Nine-Nine Sept 17th at 8:30
Single mom of two Christy (Anna Faris) is in AA, dealing with problems at work, sleeping with her married boss, and having to take care of her promiscuous daughter Violet and her young son. Her mother Bonnie (Allison Janney, West Wing) is also in AA and also has a history of sleeping around.
The problem is Mom piles so much on it becomes ridiculous. For example, in a scene at the end of the pilot Bonnie (Janney) lets in her date, a young married waiter, while Christy's ex and Violet's boyfriend are in the same room and as the young son discovers that in the video game he is playing “If you beat up the hookers enough they give you your money back”.
There is another sequence earlier on in the restaurant where there is a little too much going on at the same time for anything to be funny.
It is as if the writers decided to shove as many jokes in one scene in fear of the show not being around long enough to use all of them. They might be right.
Look for French Stewart (3rd Rock) as the temperamental chef.
