Johnny Dangerously is a love it or hate it slapstick comedy in the tradition of Naked Gun and Police Squad! traditions with many of the same kinds of funny gags and references. Michael Keaton, a very uneven performer, is very good as Johnny Kelly aka Johnny Dangerously, New York mobster. Marilu Henner plays the mob doll and Johnny's girlfriend, while Joe Piscopo plays bad mob guy Danny Vermin.
This funny movie features a who's who of comedies such as Peter Boyle (of Everybody Loves Raymond), Maureen Stapleton who is a riot as Johnny's always ailing mother, along with Griffin Dunne, Glynnis O'Connor, Alan Hale, Danny DeVito, Dom DeLuise as the pope, a running gag performance by Ray Walston as a newsstand vendor who keeps getting hit by newspaper bundles, and Joe Flaherty.
Although you could play this DVD comedy to your kids, it does have a lot of mock violence, and you probably will have to explain the expressions used in this movie such as ice hole, fargin, bastige, corksucker and so on. What makes this movie fun to watch are all the various jokes and funny situations throughout the movie as Johnny Dangerously pokes fun at a variety of James Cagney style gangster movies in a very self-conscious way.
Still, this is a short little fun comedy with a lot of sight gags that make the pause feature useful to get all of them (such as the henchmen and henchwomen bathrooms). But, again, this is one of those love it or hate it flicks and a matter of personal taste.
But if you liked movies like Caddyshack, the many comedies featuring Leslie Nielsen as Frank Drebin, you will probably like this neat movie.
