Holidays On Ice
The Ultimate David Sedaris Box Set
David Sedaris
Read by David Sedaris, Amy Sedaris, Ann Magnuson
Audio book 3 CDs
Hachette Audio 2006

Of the six audio books included in The Ultimate David Sedaris Box Set, Holidays On Ice is probably the best. Holidays On Ice contains many of the best Christmas stories and essays by NPR and This American Life contributor David Sedaris. CD 1 is the classic Santaland Diaries story about the author's experience as an elf at Macy's over the Christmas holidays. This story is to This American Life what Dave Cooks A Turkey is to Vinyl Café and CBC radio.

Also included in this David Sedaris audio book are Season's Greetings to Our Friends and Family, Based Upon A True Story on CD 2, and Dinah The Christmas Whore, Christmas Means Giving, and Front Row Center With Thaddeus Bristol on CD 3. Neither stories on the second CD of Holidays On Ice are up to par with Sedaris' usual dark and caustic comedy style essays but they are worth a listen from time to time.

Aside from the brilliant Santaland Diaries, a personal favorite on Holidays On Ice from The Ultimate David Sedaris Box Set is Front Row Center With Thaddeus Bristol where a curmudgeon reviewer from hell (no relation to yours truly) gives his take on various local grade school and middle-school Christmas pageants. Thaddeus Bristol's take on these local productions by young children is biting, nasty, and right on the nose as any non-parent who has been stuck watching one of these stage disasters sadly knows.

Ann Magnuson reads Seasons Greetings to Our Friends and Family and does a pretty good job of it. Unfortunately, you know it would be better read by Sedaris even if it is not a particularly good Christmas story. Christmas Means Giving, CD 3 of Holidays On Ice by David Sedaris, is a Christmas tale / essay about keeping up with the Joneses (or in this case the Cunninghams) first by building the biggest house and then by giving away the most stuff to the most indigent.

The one thing that annoys while listening to Holidays On Ice is the music. For some reason, some producer decided to not only have music at the beginning of the essays but also sometimes in the middle and sometimes at a volume loud enough to almost drown out the narrator's voice.

If you are patient and listen to the end credits on CD 3 you will hear David Sedaris do his impression of Billie Holiday.
