It is kind of hard to figure out why Little Miss Sunshine has been nominated for so many awards. It is a fun little road movie DVD and as they go it is pretty good but not exceptional in any way. The story takes a bit too long to get really interesting once you get past the basic weird characters you need anyways to make a road movie in the first place.
The premise of Little Miss Sunshine is the Hoover clan gets in a VW bus to get their young daughter to a beauty contest. The father is one of those positive attitude people whose life is not working out that well, the son is on a mute campaign, the grandfather, Alan Arkin, is a cokehead, the brother in law just tried to commit suicide. The mother, Toni Colette is the only fairly normal one.
Unfortunately, though this DVD has a very funny ending it takes too long to get there. You really have to hang in there for the first half of the movie before it gets really interesting. Yes this is an original comedy that is somewhat different from what Hollywood normally doles out to a suspecting public and granted it has its moments but overall, not enough to make it an Academy Award nominee in a few categories no less.
