THE LAUGHS ARE COMING!
JUST FOR LAUGHS GIVES TORONTO A TASTE OF THE LARGEST AND MOST PRESTIGIOUS COMEDY EVENT ON EARTH
Toronto, Wednesday, March 28, 2007 - Just For Laughs is thrilled to announce that it will be coming to Toronto as part of its 25th Anniversary celebrations this summer. From July 26 to 28, Just For Laughs will bring Toronto some of the most popular events from the annual Montreal Festival, including six prestigious Gala shows and free outdoor programming in Yonge-Dundas Square.
Just For Laughs will create a unique Toronto Comedy Festival with the intent of returning in future years and expanding the Just For Laughs brand. The Toronto event will not be a duplicate of the Montreal Festival. The composition and diversity of the population make it a pre-requisite that the Toronto festival offer a different approach and programming. Using 25 years of experience, Just For Laughs is committed to developing a truly distinctive Festival event that recognizes and responds to the City of Toronto, its sense of self, and its place in time. Given the strength of the City's Canadian and international tourism base, and the unparalleled ethnic diversity of its population, this promises to offer something funny for everybody.
The Festival is proud to have the support of its various partners, the province of Ontario, the City of Toronto, Tourism Toronto and Westjet. "We are pleased to provide $400,000 towards launching and promoting the first annual Toronto Just for Laughs Festival," said Minister of Tourism Jim Bradley. "More visitors, more economic activity, more jobs created, more fun in Ontario this summer - that is a comedy festival punch line we can all applaud."
"Just For Laughs has the potential to draw visitors to the City, increase Toronto's profile internationally as a tourism destination and generate strong positive impact on the local economy. Just For Laughs will be a very positive addition to the Toronto tourism, entertainment and cultural landscape," said Mayor David Miller.
"Toronto has a rich comedy heritage and through Just For Laughs that part of our personality will be even more available for visitors to experience," said Lyle Hall, Board Chair of Tourism Toronto. "The tourism industry got behind this initiative early with a significant investment because it has the potential to attract new visitors and gives our past visitors a reason to come see us again."
Toronto festival goers can look forward to: six Gala shows hosted by a major television or film star and two days of large scale free outdoor festivities made famous by Just For Laughs including: European street theatre, urban animation, buskers and musical and visual arts.
Come celebrate 25 years of laughter in Toronto this summer when Just For Laughs takes over the T-dot for an unforgettable 3-day comedy extravaganza destined to become an international event. Be there for the beginning of a new direction in comedy July 26 to 28, 2007!
