A Prairie Home Companion 2nd Annual Farewell Performance is the integral recording of the Radio City Music Hall show Garrison Keillor gave in New York City June 4th 1988. This Prairie Home Companion CD set contains some especially magical moments, the odd fake commercial, lots of good folk and Gospel music, and, of course News From Lake Wobegon.

This Prairie Home Companion CD set has many musical performances. Especially great it the audience sing-along of Tell Me Why on CD 2. Garrison Keillor added a few new lyrics to this American songbook classic including the pledge of allegiance, an airplane emergency bit about cabin pressure, and a prayer, amongst others.  A Prairie Home Companion 2nd Annual Farewell Performance, Vol. 1

Musical guests include perennials Robin and Linda Williams, Chet Atkins, and the Everly Brothers who, of course, play Bye Bye Love amongst other songs. I really enjoyed Jazznochracy by Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks on CD 2. Much less impressive is singer Karren Morrow. A Prairie Home Companion 2nd Annual Farewell Performance, Vol. 2

Fans of the early days of Prairie Home Companion will be pleased to hear a Buster the Show Dog skit where Buster goes to New York City and a Bertha’s Kitty Boutique commercial. Lemon Meringue, CD 1 is a good Kellor story.

The News From Lake Wobegon segment sputters to a start with Garrison Keillor breaking into songs. It eventually covers the story of Mayor Clint Bunsen’s battle over bringing a public sewage system to Lake Wobegon.

It is clear listening to the 2nd Annual Farewell Performance of A Prairie Home Companion that Keillor was happy to be back. This makes for a very energetic and 21/2 hour long 2 CD set.

You might want to be careful when handling the Digipack this CD set comes in: the second CD tends to pop out of its holder.
