Andrew Schulz has come up with a brilliant concept, 5:5:1 where he performs five different sets in five different comedy club in 1 night in New York City. You could even say it features five different comics. Not only is the concept brilliant, the result is a must have stand-up comedy download.

The comedy album opens with a set at the Comic Strip. The set focuses on Andrew Schulz leaving New York and experiencing nature beyond the rats and pigeons of NYC. The second routine in this set is a trip to a Canadian national park and instructions on how to deal with an encounter with a grizzly bear. You can take the boy out of the city but you can’t take the city out of the boy.

Another plus for Andrew Schulz 5:5:1 is each set shows a totally different aspect of Schulz’s talent. The second set is at Stand-Up New York. He opens with the difficullty of sending a good dic pic and then segues nicely into women’s grooming and innies and outies before closing with a biographical bit about living with three female roomates.

The third show, at The Comedy Cellar, opens with a solid bit on atheism and how the existence of God can be proven through Stephen Hawking and Christopher Hitchens. It is a warped but funny concept. Schulz then uses the religion premise to talk about gay rights and gender equality. He makes the interesting point that the more oppressed women in a culture are, the better its food. It’s a good bit but you just have to think of the French to disprove it. This show closes weak with a failed bit on school shootings.

The New York Comedy Club gets Schulz’s take on the Egyptian pyramids and those in Mexico. The stand-up believes the Egyptian pyramids were indeed built by aliens and his explanation for that is original and very funny. It is one of my favorite moments on 5:5:1

The evening closes at the Comedy Cellar Village Underground with 10 minutes on sex. It is good material but not up to the standards Andrew Schulz has set in the previous shows. I did like the last bit on how women do not really talk dirty in bed.

Andrew Schulz 5:5:1 ends abruptly with the last bit. It is understandable considering the concept behind this album but it is, to this listener, a bit jarring.

At a time where a glut of comedy albums makes it hard for a comic to stand out –everybody is trying something different (there’s been an ASMR stand-up comedy release and other comics have interspersed their material with electronic or rap versions of their material), this comedy download stands out from the crowd.
