Daddy Issues by Matt Gubser is a keeper and the kind of MP3 comedy album you keep on top of your rotation. Gubser is smart, perceptive, and has a dark side. All things I like in a comic.
The comic opens with material about his being a single dad though he claims to not be a very good one. There are quite a few very good moments in this section but the explanation he gives his daughter of the greater sociological meaning of Sir Mix-A-Lot’s “I like big butts and I can not lie” from the Baby Got Back song is an absolute hoot. If he ever plays Montreal, I want to hear it in person.
Matt Gubser also recommends we treat our robots well before these future Americans revolt. His take on our addiction to apps like Tinder is good. So is the story of how his parents met.
Another excellent bit on this comedy download is about dating as a single dad when you start referring to yourself as Daddy.
Just when you think you’ve figured out who Matt Gubser is, his act takes a different tack when he goes after the facile and superficial society America is. It gets a lot darker in the last track on this comedy download. American Values opens with “I never thought I’d be nostalgic for a school shooting.” and asks the audience for their favorite mass shooting. It cleverly shows how common an occurrence these things are and Gubser‘s American history as a series of shooting events is superb. The punchline and closer are also excellent.
