Rant comedy is quite fun and enjoyable when the stand-up has something to say. This was the case with Jamie Kilstein’s first comedy stand-up CD, Zombie Jesus. It is not the case with Libel, Slander, & Sedition, his 2011 effort.
The talent is there, the content is not. This, in part, explains why Kilstein yells too often as if volume can replace material and tends to motormouth some of his delivery.
This comedy CD opens with a one-line masturbation joke and a mild rant about Wal Mart being bad. Hmmm. It is followed by a rather weak pro Obama bit sniping at conservatives, the observation that America is not very good at waging war in Afghanistan and Iraq, the original observation that homophobia is bad and anti-gay preachers are hypocrites.
The problem with Libel, Slander, & Sedition by Jamie Kilstein is most obvious in Dear Army, a bit that lacks delivery focus and where Jamie Kilstein overcompensates in his delivery.
A bit more interesting is Idiot Christians which goes after Christians who are against hugging as being too sexual but it devolves into a standard fare anti homophobia bit. Idiot Muslims is also decent and original.
Almost good but not thought out enough is Comics Don’t Get Along With Their Fathers where Kilstein realizes he was a douchey teenager.
Libel, Slander, & Sedition closes with a rant against Nickelback. This is a really profound topic and Kilstein’s commentary, that the band is a sell-out is most original.
There are a couple of instances where Jamie Kilstein comments on people walking out on him. Not a good sign if you are recording a stand-up comedy CD.
