The Goldbergs is pretty much the 80s version of The Wonder Years. The biggest difference is though the story is told by the youngest sibling, the main character is the older brother. More emphasis is also put on the mother (played by Wendi McLendon-Covey). It is, on the whole, a very enjoyable situation comedy. The Goldbergs Season 2 features 24 episodes on 3 DVD plus more extra features than most such sets.
The highlight of The Goldbergs season 2 is Barry Goldberg’s Day Off (DVD 2) where Barry wants to recreate the Ferris Bueller movie. Those familiar with it will recognize a lot of the film’s highlights. I am sure hard core Ferris fans will notice a lot more elements. It makes for a fun episode even if it lacks a bit of energy. Another blast from the past moment is the episode where Beverly is forced to get rid of all the kids’ memorabilia and Erica’s crush on NKOTB.
Other good episodes include the one where Erica wants to be a singer, the April Fools showdown between Adam and Barry, and the dodgeball incident where Beverly goes nuclear when Adam gets hurt.
Those who were around in the eighties will enjoy all the many period references to Trivial Pursuit, the Lambada, Tiffany, and Howard the Duck.
The weak element of this sitcom is Jeff Garlin as Murray Goldberg, the father. Garlin brings nothing to the table so Murray is just a line spouting prop.
