The Ricky Gervais Show is a very odd duck indeed. The 13 episodes on this 2 DVD The Complete First Season set are simply the animated version of Gervais successful podcasts. Gervais, Stephen Merchant, and Karl Pilkington shoot the breeze in a studio. The comedy comes from Pilkington s very odd views and ideas and Gervais and Merchant poking Pilkington for more.
The animation for this HBO comedy is quite good and won an Emmy Award but the podcasts being static the show itself is mostly three talking heads in a studio.
The thing is Pilkington is not as silly as Gervais and Merchant make him out to be. For example His answer and response to philosopher Wittgenstein s posit "If a lion could talk we would not understand him" is quite smart. (Beetles, DVD 2 of The Ricky Gervais Show The Complete First Season).
One really good moment is in the Noises show where Karl talks about the rules ghosts have to live by. Gervais and Merchant make fun of him but what Karl is saying does make sense.
You do have to bear Gervais maniacal and too easily provoked laugh. It can get a bit irritating after a while especially when what Pilkington said is not that funny really.
For those for whom the British accent and some vocabulary is sometimes hard to decipher English subtitles are available to rehear a line or such.
