The John Dore Television Show - The Comedy Network
The Jon Dore Television Show

2007-08 season

I like Canadian stand-up comic Jon Dore and am happy for him that he has his own TV show titled, imaginatively enough The Jon Dore Television Show, but I am not sure about the show itself. The Jon Dore Television Show airs Wednesdays at 10:30 P.M. on The Comedy Network and the preview of episode 1 I got was not enough for me to really make up my mind though it does include a decent sounding recipe moment.

The Jon Dore Television Show is a sort of reality TV show that follows comic Jon Dore in what are supposed to be his daily routines. Dore is a likeable guy with an edge and this is pretty much how he comes across in his show. There is a certain over the top, surreal, adult dose of The Tom Green Show. In the first episode Dore goes around interviewing his family members about his ascended testicle and has a calm but confrontational talk with a day care worker: "Why do you want a child, Jon?" "I want to experience what it would be like to have a child to use to put his fingerprints on a murder weapon." This is followed by his babysitting his nephew for a clip montage, a trip to the fertility clinic for a test including a weird interview with a fertility doctor who tries to explain the process of baby making.

There are some pretty good gags in this show, such as the scene where Dore takes a cab that cuts to a toy cab going down the street and then cuts to the real cab arriving. Dore's skills at doing a fake but off the cuff improvised interviews with what seem to be real people are good. There are also some decent lines such as when Dore goes to church and says "Are you there, God? It's me, Margaret."

With the caveat that I only saw one episode, Dore was just getting his feet wet and had yet to find his rythm,  I am not sure The Jon Dore Television Show works. It is because it either does not go far enough, Dore comes across as too likeable a guy or not enough of an asshole to pull off this kind of show, or you feel the creative process too much so do not really get on board.

Episodes of The Jon Dore Television Show on The Comedy Network, Wednesdays 10:30 P.M.  will include Dore supposedly facing his drinking problem, becoming a soft core porn star, going on a quest for happiness, getting tested for STDs, and trying to quit smoking

The Jon Dore Television Show Season 2: Very odd show featuring comic Jon Dore. A bit of an acquired taste perhaps.
