Canadian stand-up comic Jon Steinberg looks like a cross between the guy on the Hair poster and a bobblehead. He is a decent comic, the kind who middles a show at most comedy clubs. Steinberg's Comedy Now! performance airs July 26th on CTV and July 27th on The Comedy Network at 10.P.M.
Steinberg is a joke teller more than a story teller. Some of his material is okay, some is better than okay.
Unfortunately, his delivery is fairly deadpan and the only time he moves on stage is to get on or off. This lack of energy is a handicap as the material itself is not that energetic. It also does not allow the audience to connect with him, especially since his constant head bobbing gives you the weird impression he is delivering the material to himself inside his head.
The comic's forte is dark humour. This is best represented in his last two Jewish jokes, the hair removal joke, and the punchline for his Make a Wish Foundation bit. I really wish Jon Steinberg had featured more of this on his Comedy Now! special.
Then again, some of it falls flat such as his pedophile / child killer material. It could have been a really good bit but since Steinberg fails to really connect with the audience you do not feel comfortable enough to laugh at material like this.
Steinberg is quite uneven. This is obvious in a thirty minute stand-up comedy special like this one. The grandpa mug bit is good, the grapes bit is something another comic would use as parody of the genre.
