Stand-up comedy fans have a choice on the weekend of September 13th 2008. They can watch the half hour version of Dean Jenkinson ‘s Comedy Now! performance on CTV at 10 on Saturday or they can watch the hour long version on The Comedy Network at 10 on Sunday. Go for the hour: more Dean Jenkinson is a good thing even if he closes with funny songs
Canadian comic Dean Jenkinson is a low key kind of guy and this makes for a conversational, story telling style that works for him and the audience. Being from Winnipeg, he is the only comic I know who has ‘peg material that doesn't put the place down although Manitoba kind of gets it in the end.
The first few minutes of this Comedy Now! show -the one hour version-are not as good as the rest of the show. Jenkinson's good bit about 2 for 1 pizza unfortunately goes for the old "if you do not have a small item your medium item is the small" joke. It's no big deal though.
Those who have followed Jenkinson for a while will be happy to know his comedy bit about American and Canadian TV shows is part of the line-up. He's brought a few changes to it since I last heard it, I think, including a really, really good dig at Air Canada and a couple of local references that sort of work like sandbagging.
Other good bits include the Indian nuclear program, skydiving, a not for the squeamish bit on laser eye surgery with a neat Borg tie-in, and a really good bifocals punchline you do not see coming.
Aside from the medium-small joke the only other weak moments are the standard suicide bomber 72 virgins bit all comics seem to have and the career day at school / jokes kids told me. I am not a fan of the funny ditty but the appliance disease tune is kind of neat.
Dean Jenkinson Comedy Now! airs September 13th at 10 P.M. on CTV. The hour long version airs September 14th on The Comedy Network and that's the better one.
