Le Pere Noel Est Une Ordure is a wild, way over the top black comedy about Christmas. It is unfortunate the DVD for this French movie does not include subtitles as a lot of the dialogue is hard to get if you are not totally fluent. This foreign film comedy features some of France’s best comic actors in a totally absurd and funny movie.
Le Pere Noel Est Une Ordure doesn’t waste time with its black comedy. Santa (Gerard Jugnot) smacks a kid, shoplifts a few things, and has a fight with his girlfriend who then leaves him.
Meanwhile, a worker at a suicide hotline (Anemone) puts a caller on hold, another caller is yakking away on a receiver on her desk, and she listens absently to a third caller. You can guess of course the suicide hotline is not the best place to call if you are distressed and that this plays a part in this French black comedy.
There is a little bit of every kind of comedy in this French film. There is some absurd stuff like Josette (Anemone) knitting three-fingered gloves for the lepers, some physical comedy like when the woman is stuck in the elevator, and some farcical moments.
Eventually, some of the callers end up at the suicide hotline headquarters. You know that is going to be funny.
The collective theatrical origins for this movie are obvious but not annoyingly so. The Zezette character is on the very annoying side and does try the viewer’s patience, especially in her scene with the transvestite.
This is not the best foreign film comedy DVD ever but it is quite absurdly enjoyable. If you like the French farce genre, Le Pere Noel Est Une Ordure should please (if you can find it).
