The third episode of the 2008 Winnipeg Comedy Festival has a sports theme. A quite successful and rather off the beaten track idea is to have this episode hosted by Hockey Hall of Fame Dennis Hull. Hull is known as a good sports banquet speaker and he brings out his A material and a couple of fresh jokes to the show. This third show in a series of six airs March 23rd 2009 at 9:30 P.M following the third episode of the 2008 Halifax Comedy Festival at 9.
The comics featured in this episode are Erica Sigurdson, Harry Doupe, and Deb Williams. Doupe has a very good sports comedy routine that covers Winnipeg’s Stanley Cup championship (1896), sports vocabulary, going to the game, and sports sponsorship. I wish Doupe had been given more time.
Non sports fan Erica Sigurdson brings an extremely funny outsider’s view of sports and sports fans aka men: “Your team until death do you part. Your girlfriend? Well let’s see how this plays out.” Sigurdson manages the difficult feat of poking fun at sports fans without sounding like bitter sports widow. She has quite a few excellent jokes, including one on wanting to be a ballerina that you just have to see in context to appreciate how brilliant it is. I also liked her observation “The bigger the fan, the BIGGER the fan.”
Stand-up comic Deb Williams closes the show. She comes out as an annoying character that undercuts a lot of the funny in her very good routine on sports parents “drive your fungus and fetid food filled vehicle to games and practices located just outside the boundaries of Google Earth”.
Game On is an excellent show. Future shows will be:
March 30, 9:30 p.m. - BON VOYAGE
A good vacation will add years to your life if the travel doesn’t kill you. Baber Sidiqui (of Little Mosque on the Prairie – played by Manoj Sood) is your tour guide through the highways and skyways. Jimmy Tingle, John Wing, and Geri Hall remind you that it’s all in fun—until you get to the security gate.
April 6, 9:30 p.m. - CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL
It’s a jungle out there as Rick Currie, Big Daddy Tazz and Don Kelly have you laughing like hyenas. Roman Danylo is the leader of this wild pack and he ain’t playin’ possum.
April 13, 9:30 p.m. - ARE YOU KIDDING
Raising a child is a serious responsibility best left to someone other than comedians. But if you have to do it, let this series be your guide. New dad Gerry Dee hosts with fatherly wisdom. Mrs. Hughes, Ali Rizvi and Al Rae offer the kind of advice that will leave Dr. Spock turning in his grave.
