The fifth of six episodes of the CBC Winnipeg Comedy Festival 2008 airs April 6th at 9:30 P.M. This is a stand-up comedy TV show I very much enjoy. The comics are good and the format, a different topic each show, is interesting. This time around host Roman Danylo and guests Rick Currie, Big Daddy Tazz, and Don Kelly do stand-up about pets and other animals.
Danylo is a good host for this episode even if a few of his jokes, such as licking yourself are standard issue. Rick Currie’s stand-up about his dumb dog is really good and eminently quotable “My dog is so dumb. I went to get a license and they would only give it a learner’s permit.”
Winnipeg comic and Native comedian Don Kelly is next up with his “special relationship” with nature: There are not a lot of vegetarians Native Peoples. He’s also got a good bit on the similarities between a squirrel and a crackhead.
Danylo does a neat bit of audience participation pantomime a la Whose Line. It’s decent enough.
Another Winnipeg comic, Big Daddy Tazz, closes the show with a bit on hunting, hunting and rednecks, and animals you eat. His routine is a bit all over the place but he does tie it together enough to make the whole thing work.
Episode 5 of the CBC Winnipeg Comedy Festival is not the best in the series of 6 but it does make for a good half hour of stand-up comedy. You can catch it April 6th 2009 at 9:30 P.M. after episode 6 of the CBC Halifax Comedy Festival at 9:00.
