Pears Before Swine is a comic strip that takes a bit of getting used to. There is nothing quite as dark, cynical, or godawfully punny as this Stephan Pastis creation. Once you get used to Pearls Before Swine it is easy to appreciate how funny and original this strip is and you really look forward to the next strip. Pearls Sells Out combines the cartoons from Mucho Macho Animals and The Saturday Evening Pearls.
Pearls Before Swine is the story of Rat, Pig, Donkey Danny, Zebra, the Crocs, Guard Duck and a few other minor characters that come in and out of the strip. Although this anthropomorphized animals comic strip occasionally refers to news and social events, the strip itself lives in its own little bubble and is usually not a reflection on humans or the way they do things.
This is a really hard comic to explain. Zebra has the Lions and the Crocs for neighbors. He hangs around with Pig and Rat, Rat being the schemer of the group. Author Stephan Pastis, who is not above a bad pun and putting himself in his own strip, is also not above referencing other strips such as Family Circus, Peanuts, and Foxtrot.
I especially enjoyed the Great Pumpkin weekend panel on page 202 of Pearls Sells Out.
The commentary by author Stephan Pastis is usually quite interesting and certainly above the norm for a strip collection
