Funny People
Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann
Written and directed by Judd Apatow
Universal 2009
146 minutes

Funny People is not about people. It is also not funny but it isn’t supposed to be.  Director Judd Apatow claims writing credits for a movie where most scenes feel improvised. Funny People is also much, much too long. The first half and the last five minutes of this Adam Sandler DVD could have made a decent movie. This is not even a decent second rental on movie night.

Funny People is about famous comic George Simons (Adam Sandler) who learns he has an incurable disease. He befriends a struggling stand-up comic named Ira (the dreadful Seth Rogen) in an attempt to get a friend and perhaps give something back. The problem is Ira is not a likeable character even if he is set up to be. The other problem is too much of Funny People focuses on Ira, his two buddies (Jonah Hill and Jason Schwartzman, who together do not have enough talent to upstage Rogen), and the girl Ira has a thing for.

The first half of this movie works when it is about George Simmons coming to grips with the fact he has success but nothing else. It also works when it concentrates on Ira’s growth as a comic through George’s help.

Halfway through, Apatow pulls the plug on this story, gives it an unbelievable Hollywood twist, and makes a whole new movie about George and his ex-girlfriend. This story is not credible and sucks what life there was in this movie.

Aside from Sandler, the acting here is too wooden for a remedial undergrad acting class. The writing proves together words stringing sentence make do not a.
