I Shouldn’t Even Be Doing This!
Bob Newhart
3 CD
Hyperion 2007

I Shouldn’t Even Be Doing This! is stand-up comic and sitcom star Bob Newhart ‘s biography on 3 CD. Read by the author, this abridged audiobook version plays pretty much like a syndicated sitcom episode: you know you are missing a few of the jokes and sometimes more than that. This Newhart biography will please fans somewhat though they really should get the book.

Newhart is a good enough reader of his own material but I Shouldn’t Even Be Doing This! sounds uneven. Newhart sometimes sound natural and conversational while other chapters sound like he is reading this stuff for the first time. The weirdest thing about this biography is Newhart ends up performing a couple of his most famous skits, King Kong and the Grace L Ferguson Airline and Storm Door Company, in studio and they really do not benefit from such a dry treatment.

This being an abridged Newhart biography, you get a glance at what the comic’s fans really want to know about: albums like The Button Down Mind, The Button Down Mind Strikes Back, The Bob Newhart Show, and Newhart. You also get passages on Newhart’s childhood, becoming a comic, his movie career, celebrity friends, and so on.

Perhaps it is because this is an abridged audiobook version but Newhart fails to make his story interesting by and of itself. It may also be because Newhart himself doesn’t really believe his is that interesting a story to begin with.

I Shouldn’t Even Be Doing This is rather disappointing.
