Miss Congeniality is a very enjoyable comedy starring Sandra Bullock in one of her first turns as a fish out of water character. Also on this Blu-ray Comedy Double Feature, Miss Congeniality 2 is a weak sequel. Fans who have been waiting for Miss Congeniality on Blu-ray will be bummed by the fact there are no special features whatsoever and would probably have preferred that to having the sequel.
In Miss Congeniality (1:85:1 Widescreen) Sandra Bullock plays FBI agent Gracie Hart. Gracie is a tomboy who knows little about femininity and wants to keep it that way. Some nefarious baddie threatens a beauty pagent run by Candice Bergen and William Shatner. Gracie is picked to be the undercover agent who will participate in the pageant. This means Michael Caine must teach her how to be a lady while she keeps an eye out for the bad guy and protect the contestants. Gracie learns to appreciate the candidates and to enjoy being a girl.
The comedy really rests on Bullock’s shoulders and has fun deriding beauty pageants.
In Miss Congeniality 2 2:4:1 Widescreen) Gracie is now too famous to be an undercover agent so she becomes a spokesperson for the FBI. This does not suit her very well at all. When Miss USA and the pageant organizer (Shatner) are kidnapped, Gracie and her bodyguard (yes, she needs a bodyguard for some reason) go to the rescue. Benjamin Bratt was wise to opt out of this sequel.
The first of the two movies on this Blu-ray Comedy Double Feature really is a lot of fun. The second is decent enough but Bullock is obviously tired of the role and tries to do something different with it that doesn’t quite work.
As a Blu-ray comedy double feature, this is a pretty decent deal but it is any better than the already available 2 DVD set.
