The 2011 Laughing Skull Comedy Festival has come to a close and it was an incredible success. 3600 people turned out over 5 days to watch 72 stand-up comedians battle it out. Judges included Michael Cox from Chelsea Lately, Jeff Singer from the Just For Laughs Montreal Comedy Festival, Josh Lieberman from 3 Arts, and TJ Markwalter from Gersh. Margaret Cho, Gary Gullman, and Robert Kelly headlined, and in attendance were Ann Harris and Joann Grigioni from Comedy Central, Dan Pasternack from IFC, and many more. In the end, Sam Morril and Tom Simmons won the top prizes, with Exiene Lofgren and Ricarlo Flanagan also placing.
"That was a great experience all around," said semi-finalist Joe Zimmerman. "Probably my favorite week of the year."
If you missed the fest, tune in to Sirius/XM in late May for a 2-hour special recap. We will also be releasing a number of "Best of" albums, as well as airing some of the festival on syndicated television. As I've always wanted to say, check your local listings for details.
For anyone who wants to participate in the 2012 fest, registration is open at SkullFestival.com. This year, we're booking spots via live shows AND tape. We'll have 11 prelim shows (with all-star judges) in NYC, LA, Seattle, Indy, and ATL. The top FOUR of each show move on. And then we fill the remaining 28 spots via tape. So if you are selected for a live show, you have two chances to be selected. And if you are not, you can still be selected based on your tape.
Thank you, and hope to see you in Atlanta!
