The only possible explanation for Mark DeBonis winning the 2011 Yuk Yuks Great Canadian Laugh Off is another Italian made the judges an offer they could not refuse. Never have I seen a less deserving winner in a stand-up comedy showcase. If you can imagine a comic who sounds like Rocky and says “You know what I mean” every second joke you got DeBonis. If you want an idea of how badly Darrin Rose, a comic with real material got robbed you can catch Yuk Yuks Great Canadian Laugh Off July 2nd at 9 on the Comedy Network.
Not only did DeBonis not deserve to win but he won against mostly weak and generic competition. Aside from Darrin Rose who had a solid set about growing up in an all-male household the only other contender was Claire Brosseau with a decent set about being single and loose.
Opener Eddie Della Sieppe has self referential material that is nothing you have not heard before. Massimo, a comic from Montreal does standard big guy and hairy Italian stuff. Newfoundlander Ian Peet drops lots of F bombs to prop up otherwise ordinary material with the exception of a good bit about auditioning for Puppetry of the Penis.
Eric Andrews stage persona is that of an awkward guy but you are not quite convinced it is a persona and he comes across as a bit creepy. Not a good thing for a comic.
Bryan Hatt is one of the last three comics competing in the 2011 Yuk Yuks Great Canadian Laugh Off. He has a good Worst Case Scenario bit.
