Picnicface is a sketch comedy group out of Halifax that gained a following on YouTube and now has a thirteen episode series on The Comedy Network. Based on the first episode, Part-time Jobs, Picnicface is going to stick around a while. This is fun, high energy, quick paced, original, irreverential, sometimes stupid, at times animated, occasionally adult comedy.
Picnicface has a clear identity, something few similar groups can really say. The coolest thing about this show is the pacing. If you do not like a particular bit it does not matter as nothing lasts more than a minute. Eight cast members also allows for great variety and styles.
The pilot features a little of everything loosely framed around the premise that the gang has to find part-time jobs to pay their rent. Some of the sketches are about that but most of them have little to do with anything else. This episode also features each cast member dunking a basketball, a ode to the Casio keyboard played on a Casio keyboard, a guy running to his accountant’s –wait until the very end for a punchline that involves one of Canada’s most sacred icons--, a short Biography style bit about a porn director, and a skit that is a reference to the movie The Box.
Picnicface is definitely worth watching. The show airs Wednesdays at 10:30 on The Comedy Network.
