Jim Breuer’s Mass Appeal was at Theatre Ste. Catherine for the early show last night, 2012-07-24. Theatre Ste. Catherine is a small theatre a few blocks east of St. Laurent Street and the meat of Montreal’s annual Just for Laughs Comedy Festival. The small venue has great sound, good lighting, reasonable seating and the staff is super responsive to the clients. We don’t normally talk about venues unless they are exceptional one way or the other and Theatre Ste. Catherine is exceptional in a good way.
In a nutshell Jim Breuer slayed. After the quick compulsory pander to the local audience, especially parents who have made the effort to get out to a show. Breuer launched into an unrelenting set that covered marriage, parenting, heavy metal, aging, practical jokes, vacationing with children, restaurants and does so with an amazing amount of energy. Breuer engages and riffs with the audience and is seemingly tireless. Whether he is talking about experiencing the joys of a Metallica concert, watching his daughter watch butterflies or eating at a restaurant Breuer’s routine is seamless so much so that the set has the feel of being spontaneous – almost like the whole thing just popped into mind when he picked up the microphone.
Without a doubt Jim Breuer is worth the price of admission. He will be appearing on the 25th to the 28th at Theatre Ste. Catherine in his show Mass Appeal and will also be part of the Muppets All-Star Comedy Gala on the 25th as well as Date Night: The Relationship Show on the 26th.
