Be Kind Rewind
Jack Black, Mos Def, Mia Farrow, Danny Glover
Directed by Michael Gondry
Alliance Atlantis 2008
102 minutes

Jack Black stars as Jerry in Michael Gondry’s latest comedy Be Kind, Rewind. Jerry likes to hang out at Be Kind Rewind, a video rental place that has no DVDs. Mike (Mos Def) runs the store and is left in charge when the owner (Danny Glover) has to leave for a while.

Jerry is a paranoid man who believes that the government is conducting some kind of weird conspiracy involving the town’s electrical system. He gets magnetically charged and accidentally erases all the tapes in the store. Soon after, they begin getting complaints from people who rented blank tapes.

Not wanting to disappoint customers, they decide to remake all of the movies,  including Ghostbusters, Rush Hour 2, Robocop, and even Driving Miss Daisy, with themselves and their friends as the actors. These remakes soon become a big neighborhood hit and bring much needed business to Be Kind Rewind.

The idea for comedy is one of the most original I have ever seen and the film itself does an incredible job at portraying the craziness and the humor found in homemade movies. From bad special effects to bad acting, it’s all there and it’s hilarious.

Who better to pull off a film like this than Jack Black? The cast also includes actors such Mia Farrow and Melonie Diaz. Director, Micheal Gondry, was able to create a film about the beauty of creativity and the beauty of a community coming together in the most original and the most entertaining way I have ever seen.

Be Kind Rewind is definitely at the top of my list of favorite cult films. I highly encourage you to check out this comedy and watch it over and over again until your DVD player breaks. However you cannot be kind, rewind as the movie is not available on VHS.
