Dick
Kirsten Dunst, Michelle Williams, Dan Hedaya
Directed by Andrew Fleming
Sony Pictures 1999
94 minutes

Dick is a pleasant comedy starring a very young Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams as two teens who catch G. Gordon Liddy and the Watergate crew in action. The Nixon administration buys their silence by hiring the girls as Presidential dog walkers. The girls are also official cookie suppliers to the White House, presidential advisors, and bring world peace.

This comedy is certainly not as silly you might think or as it is made out to be. If you know anything about the Nixon administration, the secret tapes, the Creep list, and so on there are quite a few jokes here you will enjoy. The Plumbers van is one of the many Watergate running gags.

Badly made-up Will Ferrell and Bruce McCullogh play Woodward and Bernstein.

The innuendo gag of people misunderstanding what the girls mean when they are talking about Dick is quite enjoyable. There are a few more adult innuendos in this movie including one about Deep Throat of course.

Those who remember the early 70s will enjoy some of the musical cues like Popcorn, Lady Marmalade, and Barry White’s Loves Theme. There are also a few references to 70s TV such as Love American Style and Rhoda.

Dick is not a big budget movie, it has in fact a Canadian budget, but it is fun and features a few laughs at the expense of Washington history, the 70s, and Richard Nixon. Dunst and Williams are quite good in a bubbly teen sort of way in Dick and this comedy is entertaining.

This comedy also features a long list of cameos including a badly made-up Will Ferrell and Bruce McCullough as Woodward and Bernstein; Dave Foley and Jim Breuer as Halderman and Dean; Terri Garr, Saul Rubinek as Kissinger, and Harry Shearer of The Simpsons fame as G. Gordon Liddy. The always awful Ted McGinley plays a spy

Other comedies with Dick in the title:

Life Without Dick – Sarah Jessica Parker and Harry Connick Jr in okay mystery comedy

Fun With Dick and Jane – Jim Carrey bland version
