Robin Hood Men in Tights Blu-ray
The Mel Brooks Collection Blu-ray
9 films 9 Blu-ray discs
120 page book

Robin Hood Men in Tights Blu-ray is one of the 3 best comedies in the 9 film Mel Brooks Collection Blu-ray. The others being Young Frankenstein and Silent Movie. The Mel Brooks Collection is a very good comedy box set that includes a 120 page book about Brooks and his movies and other comedies like The Twelve Chairs, To Be or Not to Be, Blazing Saddles, History of the World Part 1, Spaceballs, and High Anxiety.

Men in Tights stars Cary Elwes as Robin Hood, Richard Lewis as Prince John, and Dave Chappelle as Ahchoo. Elwes is the best Robin Hood because “unlike some other Robin Hoods (he) can speak with an English accent).

Like all of Mel Brook’s spoof comedy salutes, this movie is true to the basic Robin Hood story. The humor is in the telling, the references, the sight gags, and some of the characters. Not that Tracy Ullman as Latrine was especially interesting. I got the impression Mel Brooks couldn’t get Cloris Leachman. Richard Lewis doesn’t really do great as Prince John.

Especially good scenes are the encounter between Little John and Robin, the Godfather scene with Dom DeLuise, and the spoof of the Errol Flynn shadow fighting scene.

Special features on Robin Hood Men in Tights Blu-ray are the same as the DVD version: Funny Men In Tights: Three Generations of Comedy, HBO Special: Robin Hood: Men In Tights – “The Legend Had It Coming”, Commentary by Mel Brooks, and Isolated Score Track (DTS MA)

The Mel Brooks Collection Blu-ray is an excellent comedy box set. Unfortunately, the pages holding the discs tend to come unglued. In my case this was easily fixed by reattaching everything and pressing hard on the spine.
